New applicants for German citizenship often confuse two different types of exams. Both are necessary, but their purposes are completely different.
1. Einbürgerungstest ("Leben in Deutschland")
This exam does not measure your language skills (although the questions are in German). This test measures your knowledge of German general culture and law.
- Number of Questions: 33
- Passing Score: 17 correct
- Topics: Politics, History, Society, States
- Preparation: Passed by memorizing questions with the PassPilot app.
2. Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer (DTZ)
This exam strictly measures your German language ability (B1 level).
- Content: Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking
- Goal: To prove you can communicate in daily life.
- Preparation: Requires language courses and grammar study.
In Summary: You typically need BOTH certificates for citizenship. One
proves your language, the other your integration knowledge.
